The Importance of Being Earnest

“To lose one parent may be regarded as a misfortune: to lose both looks like carelessness.”

So says Lady Bracknell as she witheringly dismisses Ernest Worthing’s earnest suit for her archly marriageable daughter Gwendolen whose ideal has always been to marry someone of the name of Ernest.
She is not the only one. Mr Worthing’s ward Cecily also cherishes a girlish dream to love an Ernest, whom she believes to be her guardian’s wayward brother, cunningly impersonated by his hedonistic friend Algernon. Both women believe that they are engaged to the same man. But all is not as it seems: Oscar Wilde greatly ridicules manners and morality and codes of propriety and etiquette. The satisfactory resolution of the situation requires an intricate knowledge of London railway stations, a missing three volume novel and a handbag!
